Died—Of typhoid fever, at the residence
of his uncle William Pritchett in Guilford County, on the 19th
Sept., 1862, Robt. H. Donnell, son of Ervin and
Hannah Donnell, in the 19th year of his age. The deceased was a young man of amiable and
sweet disposition and very highly esteemed by a large circle of friends and
acquaintances. His parents died when he
was an infant, and he was left to the care of his aunt Mrs. Pritchett, who
trained him up to love and fear the Lord.
Being urged by a sense of duty he volunteered his services in defense of
his country on the 6th of May 1862 in Capt. Shober’s
company, 45th Regt. N. C. Troops, and went forth with the noble
youth of the land, in the glorious contest for freedom. But his delicate constitution could not
endure the hardships naturally devolvent in the life
of a soldier. He was honorably
discharged and returned to his much loved home and friends, but he was doomed
to enjoy the luxuries of home and love of devoted friends for only a short
time. And now while a large connection,
and many warm and devoted friends are mourning in bitterness, “refusing to be
comforted because he is not,” yet we humble trust that our loss is his eternal
gain.
